The year 1971 represents an iconic time in the history of Club Nacional de Football. Washington Etchamendi's brilliant team achieved victory in all the competitions in which it participated: the first victory in the Copa Libertadores over the three-time champion Estudiantes de la Plata, the conquest of the Uruguayan Championship and a victory in the Intercontinental Cup over Panathinaikos.
In 1972, Nacional completed the cycle after winning the Inter-American Cup against Cruz Azul of Mexico and winning the Uruguayan Championship for the fourth consecutive year (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972). The team was made up of extremely talented players and such legendary names as Luis Ubina, Manga, Luis Cubilla, Victor Escarrago, Julio Cesar Morales, Julio Montero Castillo and the prolific Argentine forward Luis Artime.
