The first foray of the University of Guadalajara into professional football occurred in the early 70s, with a team made up of students. After a few years in the lower divisions, the team bought a franchise and this is how 'Leones' reached the First Division of Mexican football. They made their debut on July 14, 1974.
In the 1980s, the team implemented the Basic Forces, from where the best players in the history of the UdeG emerged. Jorge 'Vikingo' Davalos, Luis Plascencia, Victor 'Tiburon' Rodriguez, Sergio 'Cayo' Diaz, Daniel Guzman, Octavio Mora, Luis Alfonso Sosa, Humberto Romero, among many more. That generation reached another league final, and won the first official title by winning the 1991 Copa Mexico.
