The first half of the 1960s was a great time for Real Betis under legendary president Benito Villamarín. The club acquired its own stadium and thrived in La Liga following its return in 1959. For the next five seasons Betis always finished in the top ten places and reached a high of third in 1964.
Fortunes waned following Villamarín’s departure in 1965 and the rest of the decade brought a yo-yo existence alternating between the top two League divisions.
